AN INTRODUCTION TO BASIS

BASIS: It provides the run time Environment for SAP Applications such as SAP ERP, SAP CRM, SAP SCM, and SAP SRM.

These four Applications ERP, SRM, CRM and SCM are related to my SAP Business Suite (Current suite also includes SAP HCM (HR),FSCM,SAP PLM,SAP EHS).

SAP Application server (BASIS) provides runtime Environment SAP applications.

Basis is a layer where all the applications reside Basis provides the infrastructure to manage, monitor, and administer the SAP Applications

E.g.:

Basis provides User Management
Business process Monitoring
Role based Security
Performance Gauge etc.

This application server is enhanced with web functionality and referred as SAP WEB Application Server(SAP WAS).

WAS is enhanced with XI(Exchange infrastructure), BI(Business intelligence), MI(Mobile Infrastructure), KM(Knowledge management) and referred as NetWeaver.

NetWeaver Provide runtime environment to SAP Applications.

NetWeaver is build with two stacks (ABAP and JAVA).

ABAP stack uses ABAP language to build the SAP Application. The entire business logic, functionality is retained in ABAP stack only.

JAVA Stack is used to provide web, mobile, exchange functionalities to existing business applications. They does not bring any business functionality and only used for accelerating the business.
